Why does the 2026/27 season start later?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup finishes in July, so the domestic calendar provides recovery time before the new league campaign. The Premier League cited 33 days after the World Cup final and 89 clear days after the previous Premier League season. That is why the opening falls later in August than many recent campaigns.
How 38 Matchweeks fit into the calendar
Each of the 20 clubs plays 38 league matches—19 at home and 19 away. The schedule is arranged across 33 weekend rounds and five midweek rounds. The fixture computer also works around international windows, UEFA competitions, the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Festive fixtures and recovery time
The league says no two festive match rounds will be placed within 60 hours of one another. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, and the released list includes ten fixtures on 26 December. Television selection may spread exact kickoffs, so treat the date as official but the un-timed slots as provisional.
